New England Patriots star cornerback Christian Gonzalez left the team’s training camp session early on Monday due to an injury, according to multiple reports.

The 23-year-old suffered the injury while covering wide receiver Stefon Diggs during 11-on-11 drills.

“CB Christian Gonzalez has departed practice and has headed to the athletic training shed under his own power after covering WR Stefon Diggs on a crossing route in an early snap of 11-on-11 drills,” ESPN’s Mike Reiss posted on Bluesky. “Appeared to be something related to his leg.”

“Christian Gonzalez walked off the field with an apparent injury after the second snap of 11-on-11s. Slight limp going to the trainer’s table,” Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald added.

Callahan reported that Gonzalez’s status was “TBD” and said that the former first-round pick’s situation was the “story of the day.” The insider added that he “didn’t see” the defensive back after he departed the practice.

Entering his third season, Gonzalez is already viewed as the team’s best player in the secondary and arguably their best defender.

He finished the 2024 campaign with team highs in passes defended (11) and interceptions (two), while adding 59 tackles across 16 games. Gonzalez earned second team All-Pro honors following the season and was fifth in the AP Comeback Player of the Year voting.
