One of the themes from the start of the New England Patriots training camp action is just how good their rookie class has been. In the eyes of starting linebacker Christian Elliss, though, one guy in this group has stood out above the rest.
The Patriots attacked the offensive side of the ball in the draft, as they used their first four picks to select left tackle Will Campbell, running back TreVeyon Henderson, wide receiver Kyle Williams and interior offensive lineman Jared Wilson.
Early on in camp, each of these guys has stood out in one way or another. The star of the group may just be Henderson, though, as he has made a real push to steal the starting running back job from the incumbent Rhamondre Stevenson.
Elliss has seen Henderson’s skill set firsthand, as he has to go up against him at practice every day. And according to the veteran defender, he thinks that Henderson is destined for “greatness” based on what he’s seen so far in training camp.
“He’s been an amazing addition to this team,” Elliss said of Henderson, per Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald. “I see nothing but greatness in him. I think he’s gonna be amazing. I can’t speak highly enough of him.”
“He even got me on a go route the other day that I just, I honestly wasn’t expecting out of him. And he just keeps showing that he can play.”
Regardless of who starts, Henderson and Stevenson both figure to play big roles for New England out of the backfield in 2025. Add in Antonio Gibson as a receiving running back, and the Patriots have the makings of a strong running back room.
The more big plays Henderson can make during training camp, though, the more snaps he will earn once the regular season rolls around. He’s done well to impress Elliss early in training camp, but the next step will be showing out during New England’s preseason opener against the Washington Commanders on Friday night.
