For nearly two decades, Chip Kelly has been one of the most highly-thought-of offensive minds in the world. He finally got a championship this year as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, and his stock hasn’t been as high as it is now in a decade.

Chip Kelly is cashing in, as he’s going back to the NFL, this time as an offensive coordinator for Pete Carroll and the Las Vegas Raiders. Chip Kelly’s return to the NFL was somewhat expected, but his insane salary is stunning the NFL world Sunday night.

Kelly was most recently in the NFL as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers for one season in 2016. Before that, he had an up-and-down tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013-2015 that resulted in his firing. At the time, he was still trying to run his lightning-tempo offense that helped turn Oregon into a national power. But, it didn’t translate as well as either the Eagles or 49ers hope. He ended up as the head coach at UCLA from 2018-2023, where he had modest success, before leaving to be the Ohio State offensive coordinator. They won a national championship this year, and the offense played their best ball at the end of the year.

Now, he’s heading to Las Vegas to help Pete Carroll revive a struggling Raiders franchise. He’s getting paid an incredible amount to do so.

The @Raiders told candidates during their search they were making a serious commitment with an infusion of cash from the new owners. Here it is—Chip Kelly was lured to Vegas with a deal averaging $6 million per year, per sources.

Kelly is now the NFL's highest-paid coordinator.

That will make him the highest paid football assistant coach in the world by a relatively significant margin. Pete Carroll is hoping that his maturity as a play-caller that he’s shown since his time in the NFL will make a successful NFL play-caller this time around. For that salary, he better be successful.

If you’re an NFL coordinator, you’ve got to be licking your chops given that salary figure. Raises are in order for a lot of guys, that’s for sure.
