Tom Brady is trying to be subtle about his role with the Las Vegas Raiders and all of the organization’s important offseason moves. Chip Kelly accidentally exposed him for intentional deceit.
The seven-time Super Bowl champion is very much involved in day-to-day operations even if he chooses to say otherwise.
Brady, 47, became a minority owner of the Nevada-based NFL organization in October. It was a rather controversial move considering his role as the A-team color commentator with Fox but it was approved.
Since that day, the Raiders fired head coach Antonio Pierce and hired Pete Carroll as his replacement. They named Kelly as their new offensive coordinator not long thereafter. He will get paid more than some other head coaches in the league to lead the offense in Las Vegas.
With the new staff (mostly) in place, the focus now shifts toward the NFL Draft. The Raiders are likely going to take a quarterback and might choose do so with the No. 7 overall pick.
By all accounts, Brady is involved in the pre-Draft evaluation process. Mark Davis brought in the greatest quarterback of all-time to help pick his next franchise signal-caller.
Here is where things get murky.
Bryan Curtis of The Ringer recently asked Tom Brady to clarify his role in Las Vegas’ off-season moves on a conference call with Fox. His answer was vague. He said it is a “long term, kind of behind-the-scenes type role” that will “support the team and the leadership and the overall vision for success.”
Chip Kelly directly contradicted the minority owner on The Audible podcast.
Tom Brady, on the ownership side, he kind of represented the ownership during the interview process. It was cool to listen to their vision and their thoughts on what the Raider way is.

That does not sound like someone who is working “behind-the-scenes.” In fact, it sounds like the exact opposite.
Kelly accidentally exposed Brady for lying about his role with the Raiders. His attempt to downplay his involvement in the offseason decisions immediately blew up in his face. Awkward.
