NFL owners voted this week to allow a limited number of NFL players to participate in flag football at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. I was already excited to see flag football in the biggest games on the planet, so adding the prospect of NFL players to the mix makes it even more fun.

The resolution also needs to be approved by the NFLPA, the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), and “the relevant Olympic authorities to implement rules governing the participation of NFL players in flag football”.

Each participating nation may select one player per NFL team plus any player in the International Pathway Program is eligible on top of the one player. So Josh Allen and James Cook can’t both be on the United States team, as an example, since only one player per team is allowed. With only six teams participating on the men’s side, the most players an NFL team could send will be seven (six players plus the International Pathway Program).

That’s not to say that every spot on the field will be taken by NFL players, Minnesota Vikings linebacker Brian Asamoah told the BBC.

“You can’t just count out the guys that play flag football. I think that’s the tricky thing right there. Just because you’re good at American football doesn’t mean you’re good at flag football, so you have to share that respect.”

Now that we have the news out of the way, let’s speculate about current and former Buffalo Bills that would have been great flag football players or could be for the future.

QB Josh Allen

Allen obviously has a rocket arm and a competitive spirit. Would love to see him chucking to Justin Jefferson.

RB James Cook

Cook is shifty and can catch the ball after making the snap. I’d rather have him that a bigger back like Derrick Henry in this sport.

TE Dalton Kincaid

I think Kincaid has a pretty good shot of playing for the Canadians should they qualify. His mother was born in Canada and he has Canadian citizenship.

WR Khalil Shakir

This is a long shot, but he’s so quick on his feet with great balance. You could do a lot worse than Shakir.

WR Stefon Diggs

Former Bills WR Stefon Diggs has played in the Pro Bowl games at receiver and would have been a natural selection a few years ago. Maybe not anymore after his leg injury and Father Time catching up with him.

WR Lee Evans

underrated due to lackluster QB play during his career, Lee Evans would be deadly on a flag football field.

RB Thurman Thomas

If I am pulling one player off the Bills’ Super Bowl teams, it’s Thurman. The dude was great catching the ball out of the backfield and elusive as...
