Following the Los Angeles Rams’ blockbuster trade for superstar edge rusher Myles Garrett, head coach Sean McVay addressed growing rumors that future Hall of Fame defensive tackle Aaron Donald is considering coming out of retirement.
In an interview with Sarah Barshop of ESPN, McVay confirmed that he remains in close contact with Donald and has already discussed the unique opportunity of bringing Garrett on board alongside him.
McVay expressed confidence that if the 35-year-old defensive icon decides to “dust off” his cleats, he could still perform at an exceptionally high level, further fueling speculation about a potential comeback after a teaser from Pat McAfee.
This hypothetical defensive pairing has sent chills down the spines of opposing offenses throughout the league, particularly catching the attention of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
According to a report from The Rams Wire, Kelce expressed disbelief about the possibility of Donald anchoring a defensive front that already includes Garrett, Kobie Turner, Byron Young, and Braden Fiske.
His brother, Jason Kelce, humorously suggested that if he were still an active NFL center, he would launch an official petition to block the move, calling the potential pairing “cheating” and implying that Commissioner Roger Goodell would have to intervene.
Travis echoed this concern, jokingly stating, “I’m starting a GoFundMe. This isn’t allowed. I don’t know what we’re raising money for, but we’re going to put a halt to this.”
This competitive anxiety is very real, as the Kelces and the Chiefs are scheduled to face Garrett and the Rams at SoFi Stadium during a highly anticipated Week 13 Thursday night showdown.
Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III took to X to explain why this potential defensive combination would be nearly impossible to block.
He asserted that placing Garrett and Donald on the same defensive line would completely disrupt every offensive coordinator’s game plan.
Griffin emphasized that because both players are premier, relentless game-wreckers, teams would find it impossible to block them one-on-one or execute simultaneous double teams effectively.
