There has been buzz about whether the Chiefs may consider a switch heading into the matchup.
On Thursday, the Kansas City Chiefs addressed the media ahead of their trip to New Orleans, where they will prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, February 9.
Few questions remain about these Chiefs. In their estimated injury report on Wednesday, Kansas City listed five players who all would have been full participants.
The sole topic circulating among Chiefs fans is whether the team might pivot to D.J. Humphries at left tackle, replacing Joe Thuney, who has held the position since Week 15. Head coach Andy Reid effectively shut down that idea when he spoke to reporters on Thursday.
“It will probably be the same,” said Reid of the offensive line rotation that features Thuney at left tackle and Mike Caliendo at left guard. “We’ll rotate them all in there, but I think it will probably end up being the same when it’s all said and done.”
Many have cited concerns about a potential matchup between Eagles second-team All-Pro defensive tackle Jalen Carter and Caliendo, but it’s worth noting that, in 2024, Carter lined up almost exclusively on the left side of the defensive line — mirroring the right side of the offensive line.
Thuney has earned significant praise for being able to jump out to left tackle and perform at a high level. After allowing three pressures against the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round, he settled in against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship, finishing pressure-free.
“That’s a tough deal,” said Reid on the “Pat McAfee Show” Wednesday. “It’s a lonely area about there at the tackle spot. Normally, the other two spots, you’ve got friends on both sides. Out there, you don’t, and it could be a short corner at times if the tight end’s not next to you. You got to be wired right for that thing and have enough athletic ability to play it, and he’s got all of that.”
