Chiefs Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub Rips President Trump’s Take On Kickoff Rules: ‘I Hope He Hears [Me]’

Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub issued a cutting response to President Trump’s criticisms of the NFL’s kickoff rules. Trump called the new kickoff rules “terrible” during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.

According to President Trump, the NFL’s recently introduced dynamic kickoff rules are “demeaning” and that it hurts the “pageantry” of the game.

“I think it’s so terrible. I think it’s so demeaning, and I think it hurts the game. It hurts the pageantry,” Trump said while appearing on The Pat McAfee Show on Veteran’s Day.

“I’ve told that to (NFL Commissioner) Roger Goodell, and I don’t think it’s any safer. I mean, you still have guys crashing into each other.”

Toub, however, couldn’t seem to care less about Trump’s opinion. In fact, he took a major shot at the President by saying he doesn’t even know what he’s looking at and is essentially clueless on the matter.

“He doesn’t even know what he’s looking at. He has no idea what’s going on with the kickoff rule,” Toub told the media when asked about Trump’s take. “So take that for what it’s worth. And I hope he hears it.”

According to ProFootballTalk, in 2024, the first season of the so-called ‘dynamic’ kickoff, there were were 920 kickoff returns over the course of the season, with seven of them being returned for touchdowns.

By comparison, when PFT published its report on October 16, there had already been 764 kickoff returns so far this year, putting it on pace to be way above last season’s total.

With one game played in Week 12 of the 2025 NFL season, there have been four kickoffs returned for a touchdown so far.
