On Friday morning, we learned a signing reported on Wednesday didn’t really happen.
On Wednesday, we reported that the Kansas City Chiefs had signed wide receiver Kwamie Lassiter II. He was believed to be taking the place of punter Eddie Czaplicki, who was officially reported as waived in Wednesday’s official NFL transactions report.
But on Friday morning, Lassiter was nowhere to be found on the practice field at Missouri Western State University. So it appears that the original report (from UFL reporter James Larson) was in error. While Lassiter did try out with the team on Wednesday, Kansas City did not sign him.
Instead, the Chiefs say they have signed three new players: cornerback Ajani Carter, cornerback Azizi Hearn and wide receiver Key’Shawn Smith. All three were at Friday’s practice.
To make room for these three signings on their 90-man roster, Kansas City has waived cornerbacks Eric Scott and Darius Rush. Both were given injury designations, which means that if they clear waivers (which is likely), they will go on the team’s Reserve/Injured list.
Carter hails from the University of Houston, where he appeared in 11 games as a senior, collecting 22 tackles (11 solo, one for loss), half a sack and three passes defensed. Before then, he spent four seasons at Utah State. He checks in at 6 feet 2 and 200 pounds.
Hearn played for Arizona and Wyoming before finishing his college career at UCLA in 2022. The 6-foot-1, 204-pound corner entered the league as an undrafted free agent for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023. Released at 2023’s final cutdown, he’s spent time on the practice squads of the New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers and New York Giants over the last two seasons.
Smith was signed by the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in May, but was waived on July 22. Over five seasons (three with Miami of Florida, followed by two with SMU), the 6-foot-1, 188-pound wideout collected 1,581 yards (and 13 touchdowns) from 106 catches over 57 games.
