The All-Pro defensive tackle has decided to partake in the voluntary workouts.
Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones is setting a strong example this offseason during organized team activities (OTAs), demonstrating his leadership as he enters his 10th NFL season. The five-time Pro Bowler is embracing the offseason work, using the voluntary practices to connect with teammates and the new class of rookies.
Although OTAs are optional, Jones is choosing to be on the field, in the locker room, and around the team — demonstrating the kind of leadership that has helped define the Chiefs’ success in recent years. On Wednesday, defensive line coach Joe Cullen called Jones’ attendance “phenomenal” and said that it is meaningful to the younger players to see the veteran at these early practices.
“Chris has been here almost every day, and he’s a great leader, he’s in great physical shape and he’s working hard.” shared Cullen. “He’s also taking the time with the rookies and for those guys to see a player of his caliber doing that at this time of the year, it’s invaluable.”
Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who has coached Jones since 2019, knows firsthand the impact the veteran brings — not only on Sundays but also throughout the entire year. The coordinator sees Jones’ participation at OTAs as a significant boost to the team’s offseason preparation.
“I enjoy having Chris around here,” said Spagnuolo. “I think the other guys do too and he’s kind of handled it really good. I think he enjoys being around, too. He’s got his kids here and stuff, so it’s been really good.”
“It feels like in-season because he’s here.”
