The Chiefs have capped off their last three Super Bowl parades with a massive rally outside Union Station in Kansas City. However, things will look a bit different if the team manages to pull off the three-peat due to the shooting that caused the event to descend into chaos last year.
It took 50 years for the Kansas City Chiefs to secure their second Super Bowl title after winning The Big Game for the first time in 1970, and as every NFL fan is painfully aware by now, their victory over the 49ers in 2020 marked the start of a dynasty that could seemingly stretch to the end of the decade and beyond based on how dominant they’ve been.
On Sunday, the Chiefs will have the chance to become the first franchise in NFL history to win the Super Bowl three years in a row, and while it’s safe to assume the majority of people will be rooting for the Eagles to prevent them from doing so, Philadelphia has a fairly tough task ahead of them as 1.5-point underdogs.
Last year, close to one million people gathered in Kansas City for the third Super Bowl parade to make its way through its streets in the past five years, which ended with the Chiefs holding a rally in the shadow of Union Station.
However, things took a tragic turn when one person was killed and another 22 bystanders were injured in the shooting that broke out right after the ceremony concluded (four people were ultimately charged over an incident stemming from an argument that led to the guns being fired).
According to KSNT, that understandably led to officials in Kansas City reevaluating their plans for another potential Super Bowl celebration, and the outlet reports the powers that be have approved a proposal to hold a rally at Arrowhead Stadium that would be largely limited to players and their families.
That event would preempt the parade with a route “designed to minimize crowd density,” and there are tentative plans to broadcast the rally on screens situated around the streets of Kansas City so the fans who won’t be permitted inside Arrowhead will have the chance to watch it while preparing to welcome the team.
