After the Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiver Xavier Worthy sustained a shoulder injury in Friday night’s season-opening 27-21 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, information about his status has been hard to come by.
On Sunday, we had a report confirming that Worthy’s injury was a dislocated shoulder, but that more tests were expected. On Monday, head coach Andy Reid said nothing about test results, but did report that Worthy was “rehabbing his shoulder” and was considered “day-by-day.”
On Tuesday, our Dakota Watson theorized that given what we knew, we could expect Worthy would likely miss 3-4 weeks — but that if adjoining structures had been damaged, he might miss 6-8 weeks.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Reid said that only Worthy and rookie wide receiver Jalen Royals (who is dealing with tendonitis in his knee) would be held out of Wednesday’s practice.
“Those two won’t practice today,” said the coach in his opening statement. “Both are doing better; they’re working on it and making progress. But they’re not ready to go today, for sure.”
Reporters wanted more details on Worthy. Is surgery being considered for the second-year player?
“No,” declared Reid, making a rare black-and-white statement about a player’s injury. “Not right now.”
Would Worthy be placed on the team’s Reserve/Injured list? Reid demurred again.
“He’s just rehabbing here,” he said.
So again, we have been given no timeline for Worthy’s return. But it is excellent news that surgery is not being considered — and that the team has no plans to put the wideout on IR. That information would lead us to believe that Dakota’s shorter timeline is more likely than his longer one.
But as always… things can change tomorrow.
Meanwhile, there’s the issue of Royals’ availability. Reid said that the rookie would “probably not” be back for Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Reid called it “a stretch” to think he could play so soon.
