Every NFL team has a sizeable security team tasked with protecting its players, coaches, and personnel. That includes the Chiefs, who had to install bulletproof glass in Andy Reid’s office after a bullet flew through the window while he was working there during an incident that transpired more than a year ago but only recently came to light.
Most sports fans are able to enjoy their favorite pastimes without getting crippilingly invested in the games that can nonetheless drive some overly passionate fans to do some crazy things.
There are obviously plenty of perks that come with being a professional athlete or coach, but you sadly run the risk of attracting the attention of an unhinged stalker, a jilted sports bettor, and other lunatics who are unable to keep their emotions in check.
That reality means every pro franchise has a security staff that’s dedicated to keeping its employees safe, including the one for the Chiefs that was forced to take some precautions after the team’s target facility was struck by multiple bullets last year.
The Chiefs have been the team to beat in the NFL since they won the Super Bowl in 2020, and Andy Reid has played a pivotal role in injecting new life into a team that’s become a juggernaut thanks in no small part to the offense he’s orchestrated while helping Patrick Mahomes become a force to be reckoned with.
Kansas City’s security personnel have also had their work cut out for them ever since Travis Kelce started dating Taylor Swift, and according to The Kansas City Star, they were forced to leap into action due to a scary situation that unfolded last year.
The outlet spoke wth multiple sources who confirmed details on an incident the teams had managed to keep under wraps since it unfolded near shortly after midnight on May 4th, saying it transpired when Reid was sitting in his office in the team’s training complex when “a bullet fired from outside the building penetrated the glass and shot a hole through the window and blinds” around 15 feet from where he was sitting.
The Kansas City Police Department confirmed it launched an ongoing investigation into the shooting, saying another bullet was found lodged in the exterior of the building and a third was discovered in an air conditioning unit. However, they currently don’t have any suspects or a possible motive.
The practice facility is located in the vicinity of Arrowhead Stadium in an industrial area of Kansas City (it’s unclear where Reid’s office is located, and the Chiefs obviously have some incentive to keep that a secret). It’s hard to envision a scenario where rogue bullets would have struck the building, but it is surrounded by wooded areas where someone would be able to fire off a few shots without being spotted.
The Chiefs subsequently installed bulletproof glass in Reid’s office as...
