The demise of the Kansas City Chiefs has been exaggerated once again. After a 2-3 start to the season, they’ve won three straight to improve to 5-3 and have scored 28 or more points in their last four games. But they can still use help, especially on the defensive side, ahead of the Nov. 4 trade deadline.
On the latest episode of “The Sportsnaut Interview” podcast, 96.5 The Fan radio host Bob Fescoe told Evan Groat that the Chiefs will be “aggressive” in addressing their defensive line needs.
“The Chiefs are always aggressive; defensive line is where they have to go, they still need help,” Fescoe said. “They got Mike Pennel the other day back. They let him go at the end of training camp, which I thought was a really bad move at the time, and then Cincinnati just let him go. But him and Chris Jones play great together, and so they went out and got Mike Pennel back. But I still would go after some defensive line help.”
The Chiefs have a top-five defense in total yards and points allowed, but they give up 100 yards on the ground per game and only have 17 sacks through eight games, which ranks 16th in the league. They’re also dead last in hurries with nine.
With pass rush a key need, the Chiefs could go shopping for edge rushers like Cincinnati Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson, Miami Dolphins’ Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips, New York Giants’ Kayvon Thibodeaux or New Orleans Saints’ Cam Jordan. They could also target defensive tackles Calais Campbell of the Arizona Cardinals and Keeanu Benton of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Chiefs have a big Week 9 road matchup against the Buffalo Bills and are 2.5-point favorites.
