The Kansas City Chiefs have elevated former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Steven Nelson from their practice squad for Super Bowl LIX.

The Chiefs elevated Nelson on Saturday, putting him in line to play on Sunday night in the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Nelson played two seasons for the Steelers in 2019-20 before a contentious exit from the team. He spent the last two seasons with the Houston Texans before retiring this offseason. He came out of retirement to sign with the Chiefs on Dec. 9.

Nelson has not played in a game with the Chiefs since joining the club. He appears to be in line to serve as a backup to starters Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. Kansas City also has two younger backups in Joshua Williams and Nazeeh Johnson.

Johnson and Williams have not played as well as hoped this season, and the veteran Nelson could be an upgrade as a backup.

This is Nelson’s second stint in Kansas City. He was a third-round pick of the Chiefs out of Oregon in 2015 and spent five seasons there before joining the Steelers in 2019.

He also played one season with the Eagles in 2021 after leaving Pittsburgh before catching on with Houston and then returning to Kansas City.

Kickoff in Super Bowl LIX between the Chiefs and the Eagles is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, and the game will be broadcast by FOX.
