The Chiefs made a somewhat surprising trade earlier this month, sending offensive tackle Wanya Morris to Atlanta for a late Day 3 pick swap.
That trade was informed by an encouraging spring from undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson. He impressed during OTAs, per ESPN’s Nate Taylor, giving Kansas City some confidence in their tackle depth behind starters Josh Simmons and Jaylon Moore. Benson could even push Moore for the starting right tackle job, Taylor adds.
Benson, 23, finished his college career with 33 starts, split across three seasons at Indiana and one at Colorado. In 2025, he started 12 games for the national champion Hoosiers with a 96.1 pass blocking efficiency that ranked 207th out of 251 offensive tackles (min. 500 snaps), per Pro Football Focus (subscription required). He brings a prototypical frame (6-foot-5, 321 pounds, 34.6-inch arms) and ran a 5.08-second 40-yard dash at Indiana’s pro day with solid numbers in the vertical and broad jumps.
Morris was entering the last year of his contract, and unless something changed drastically in the coming months, was very unlikely to receive an extension from the Chiefs. He may not have even made the 53-man roster coming out of camp. By trading him now, Kansas City can guarantee some kind of a return and ensure younger tackles like Benson and Chukwuebuka Godrick, a second-year UDFA who started three games as a rookie, get crucial developmental reps this summer.
