At some point, Patrick Mahomes’ contract went from the biggest deal for a quarterback to a bargain. With the market for quarterbacks going up year after year, the Kansas City Chiefs QB’s contract has looked meager in comparison. With Mahomes’ contract set to expire soon, though, Kansas City has given him a lucrative extension that he more than deserves.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach released a statement shortly after the extension was announced. The general manager said that this is a huge day for the team, and that this contract is a “landmark deal” for Mahomes.

” Patrick has grown into one of the most prolific quarterbacks to ever play the game, and to add to that, he’s changed the culture of our building and has led us in the most successful era in our franchise’s history,” Veach said. “Beyond the game, he’s an incredible person who puts his team and winning above everything else.”

“For Patrick, we know he’s more motivated than ever to get back out there and lead us,” he added. “I’m happy for him and his family, and excited for our future together.”

Mahomes signed an extension that goes all the way to 2033 that’s worth over half a billion dollars. The Chiefs star now has an approximate average value (AAV) of $64 million: the biggest mark in league history. Mahomes’ initial contract extension paid him $45 million per year for 10 years, which was the biggest contract in NFL history at the time. With quarterback contracts ballooning year after year, Mahomes was due for an updated contract.

Mahomes is coming off a torn ACL he suffered in the 2025 regular season. While the Chiefs star is still in recovery, he’s expected to play in Week 1 of the 2026 season. Kansas City is looking to get back to their winning ways after missing the playoffs for the first time in the Mahomes era.
