On Saturday, the Chicago Bears signed kicker Jake Moody to the practice squad, while placing rookie undrafted free agent Xavier Carlton on the practice squad/injured reserve list.

Moody was cut by the San Francisco 49ers a few days ago after missing two of his three field goal attempts in the 49ers’ season opener. The 25-year-old Moody, a third-round draft pick in 2023, has made 74.2% of his field goal tries in his career, including a six-for-twelve mark from 50 yards plus, with a career long of 57.

He may have a bigger leg than the current Chicago kicker, Cairo Santos, but he’s been much worse in his young career.

Santos, who turns 34 in November, is signed through 2027, with $3.1 million already guaranteed this season, but they could save about $3.2 million if he’s a post-June 6 cut next year.

Adding Moody is a low-risk move to get a talented kicker in the building with an eye toward 2026.

The Bears also announced today that wideout Jahdae Walker (ankle) was downgraded to out for Sunday’s game in Detroit, and that defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon was elevated to the active roster from the practice squad. This is Kpassagnon’s second of three evaluations permitted before he’d need to be signed to the 53-man roster.
