The Chicago Bears made a valiant comeback in their game against the Detroit Lions, but for a second week in a row, that comeback attempt fell short. They lost 19 to 16 on a last-second Lions field goal.
The loss dropped them to (11-6) on the season, but by virtue of the Washington Commanders’ 24 to 17 upset over the Philadelphia Eagles, the Bears remain in the second seed in the NFC and will host the Green Bay Packers in Wildcard Weekend.
As for the Lions game, the Bears couldn’t get anything going for nearly three quarters, but 16 fourth-quarter points made the game interesting.
A late Kevin Byard interception gave the Bears a chance, but there was no magic this time as a three-and-out and a punt gave the Lions the ball at their own 37, and the Bears’ defense couldn’t get another stop.
Detroit’s Jared Goff threw for 331 yards and a touchdown, and Amon-Ra St. Brown caught 11 for 139.
Caleb Williams passed for 212 yards and a couple of touchdowns, plus an interception, and his 25-yard TD pass to Jahdae Walker broke the franchise’s single-season passing yards record (3,838) previously set by Erik Kramer thirty years ago.
Rookie tight end Colston Loveland was Williams’ favorite target on the day, catching 10 for 91 yards and a touchdown.
The Bears will need to play a 60-minute game in the playoffs to avoid being a one-and-done game against the Packers.
