It’s no secret that first-year Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson is one of the brightest offensive minds in the entire NFL.

For three years, Johnson led one of the league’s most explosive offenses in Detroit before crossing enemy lines and becoming the Bears’ head coach in 2025.

This year, the 39-year-old has led a stunning turnaround in Chicago. The Bears went from 28th in the league in points per game (18.2) in 2024 to ninth this season (26.2), and from dead last in total offense with 283.5 yards per game to sixth this season with 373.4 yards per game.

Johnson has also helped second-year quarterback Caleb Williams develop from an absolute disaster to one of the best fourth-quarter signal callers in the league.

On Saturday against the Packers, the rookie head coach’s genius was on full display, especially with one specific call.

Ben Johnson Uses Chicago Bears OL As Wide Receiver For Downfield Blocking

At one point during the game against Green Bay, Johnson had 6-foot-7, 304-pound offensive tackle Theo Benedet lined up out wide at wide receiver.

But rather than using Benedet as a decoy or throwing a quick screen in behind him, Johnson had Benedet run a post some 20 yards down the field.

Theo Benedet (Bottom of the screen) running a deep post for no reason. There was no motion or trickery. They broke the huddle and lined up like this. He just ran a post. There was no reason for him to be the one to do this. It could have been any player. I love Ben Johnson pic.twitter.com/abGxbdJerG

Now, at this point, you may be wondering, “Why wouldn’t you just have a wide receiver run the same route?”

After all, they’re not throwing a pass to an offensive tackle 20 yards downfield. However, a further examination of the play shows rookie tight end Colston Loveland running a deep over route about five yards shorter than Benedet.

While the pass ultimately fell incomplete, had Loveland caught the ball, the timing of the play was such that Benedet was perfectly positioned to block the Packers’ safety, which may well have allowed Loveland to run for a big play or even a touchdown.

It’s one of the most creative uses of an offensive lineman you will ever see, and one of these days, that play is going to hit for a big gain.
