Year two in the NFL was supposed to represent a second chance for young Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams.

Williams, the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft struggled mightily as a rookie under head coach Matt Eberflus and offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who was fired midway through his first season with the team.

But this time around, Williams is armed with a new head coach in the form of Ben Johnson, widely considered one of the top offensive minds in the NFL, and the former offensive coordinator of the NFC North rival Detroit Lions.

However, in his first game under Johnson, Williams looked much like he did a year ago.

Williams once again showed impressive flashes of athleticism. Unfortunately, the accuracy issues that plagued him all last season (and in preseason) reared their head again, on several occasions.

Caleb Williams’ Misses Finally Got To Chicago Bears HC Ben Johnson

After an up-and-down first half, Williams began the second half with three straight incompletions, including a pair of non-competitive throws. By that point, Johnson had seen enough.

Johnson could be seen shaking his head and saying “god d— it” after the third incompletion, clearly annoyed with his quarterback’s poor play.

“I thought he started off really well. I don’t know,” Johnson said after the game. “I’ll have to go back and look at exactly where those incompletions came in. It certainly felt like it dried up a little bit. Probably a credit to Flores and the Vikings, as well, making some adjustments on their end. Some things tightened up, as well.”

Johnson avoided being too harsh on his young quarterback, which is probably the right play. And it could just be a matter of Williams getting back into the flow of things. But if you’re a Chicago Bears fan, or Ben Johnson, it’s hard not to be concerned with what you saw on Monday night.
