A couple of weeks ago, the news broke that Ben Johnson would be hired as the 19th head coach in Chicago Bears history. The decision was met with shock and excitement, which has only grown since. With over 30 updates in our week one assistant coach tracker, we wanted to start a fresh tracker for the second week of the coaching staff search.
UPDATE: We’ll keep this tracker rolling as we head into week three of the search.
The Bears have yet to announce any assistants officially, but we have what was reported if you scroll down the page. Also, down below the tracker is a breakdown of the league rules in regards to hiring assistant coaches.
Check out Bill Zimmerman’s exclusive interview with Ben Johnson’s agent, Rick Smith, for the most transparent look at the head coach search process ever.

The Rooney Rule applies to the three coordinator positions as well as the quarterback coach. Two minorities must be interviewed for a vacant coordinator position, and one minority must be interviewed for a QB coach position, with all of these being permitted to be virtual.
Also, keep in mind that when hiring assistants away from other teams, the only job opportunity that can’t be blocked is a position coach to an offensive, defensive, or special teams coordinator position. Teams just can’t slap an “assistant head coach” title on a guy and call it a promotion to force teams to allow an interview.
