Cheese Curds, 9/18: Defense takes center stage in Green Bay

How long has it been since the Green Bay Packers’ defense outshined the team’s offense? Even when the Packers won Super Bowl XLV after the 2010 season, the Aaron Rodgers-led offense was largely the star of the show.

2025 feels like the script is flipping, however. Through two weeks, at least, the defense has been dominant while the offense — still effective against playoff teams from a year ago — has left plays out on the field. It’s a fun change to have for fans, but the team would love to be a little more balanced and see the offense hitting on their big play opportunities.

The Packers have also prioritized speed on both sides of the football lately, particularly on defense but in the receiving corps as well. Between Matthew Golden, Jayden Reed, and Christian Watson (whenever he returns from his injury), there are field-stretchers in there, while the defense as a whole is exceptionally fast. It makes for a fun team to watch, and hopefully it will lead to continued success over the next several months.

Yes, Edgerrin Cooper is fast, but so are almost all of his defensive teammates, at least relative to their positions. That’s a big reason why the unit has looked so explosive so far this season.
