The Chargers used the rare UFA tender on RB J.K. Dobbins

The Chargers joined the Browns (WR Elijah Moore) this week by placing the seldomly-used unrestricted free agent tag on running back J.K. Dobbins. The tender gives the Chargers exclusive negotiating right if he remains unsigned by the start of this year’s training camp.

Utilizing the UFA tender also leaves the Chargers eligible to receive a compensatory pick should he go ahead and sign with a team before camp. Under the tenure, should Dobbins play under it in 2025 with the Bolts, he’ll earn $3.428 million which is a small bump from his salary this past season.

Before the Chargers and Browns this year, the Chiefs were the last team to use the UFA tender on a player as they used it on both Melvin Ingram and Justin Houston.

On a cheap one-year deal in 2024, Dobbins bounced back from an injury-riddled tenure with the Ravens to record career highs in both rushing yards (905) and touchdowns (nine) in his first season with the Bolts. Should he return to the Chargers, he’d be a part of a three-headed monster in the backfield alongside Najee Harris and rookie Omarion Hampton.

However, that seems awfully unlikely at this point in time.
