Chargers starters to play vs. Rams

In a stark difference from preseasons of the past, Justin Herbert and a number of the team’s starters on both sides of the ball will get playing time this Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams.

On Thursday, Jim Harbaugh told members of the media that starters will get about a series or two against the Rams. The only starters he named that would not be seeing the field on Saturday were veterans Khalil Mack and Derwin James.

The news comes just a few days after the Chargers canceled their joint practice on Wednesday due to being “too banged up.” As The Athletic’s Daniel Popper notes in his X post below, the Chargers starters have not received any “starter-on-starter” reps this week and it looks like Harbaugh wants his team to be able to dip their toes in that water a bit before the regular season arrives in less than a month’s time.

Specifically on Herbert, Harbaugh said he will get at least one series and “maybe” a second one. The thing is, I think I speak for the entire fan base when I say it should just be the one.

At the same time, it might actually be fun to get an early look at Ladd McConkey, Joe Alt, and the other young studs on the team weeks before the season opener in Brazil. However, in a very, very limited fashion of of course.
