Chargers signing RB Nyheim Hines amid NFL comeback

Nyheim Hines has not played in the NFL the past two seasons following a leg injury he sustained in a jet ski accident.

After working him out this week, the Chargers are reportedly signing former Colts and Bills running back Nyehim Hines as he attempts an NFL Comeback, per NFL insider Adam Schefter. Hines has not played in the NFL for two seasons after he sustained a leg injury during a jet ski accident.

Through his first five professional seasons, Hines has mainly been used as a change-of-pace back while contributing as a kick and punt returner. He averaged 596 yards of offense per season with 11.8 yards per punt return and 20.2 yards per kick return.

Hines’ best season came in 2020 when he totaled 862 yards of offense (380 rushing, 482 receiving) and scored seven total touchdowns.

The Chargers running back room does not currently employ a traditional “scat-back” or third-down back who excels as a receiving threat so I actually really like this move to help round out the running back room. It remains to be seen if Hines has rehabbed long enough to return to performing at the highest level, but he’ll nonetheless be one of the best feel-good stories on the Chargers as long as he’s a member of the team.
