The Chargers were chosen to open their season in Brazil against the divisional rival Chiefs, but they aren’t getting the benefit of the doubt in their odds.

We knew for awhile prior to the official NFL schedule release that the Chargers would begin their 2025 season by playing in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Once the schedule release finally arrived, we got the confirmation that they’d be facing a divisional rival in the Chiefs in what should be one of the best games of Week One.

The unfortunate part — and likely unsurprising as well — is that the fine folks in Vegas are not giving the Chargers the benefit of the doubt in this one entering year two under Jim Harbaugh. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Bolts are opening as 2.5-point underdogs to Kansas City. The over/under is currently set at 44.5.

When looking back at the offseason both of these teams had, I don’t think we can say the Chargers made substantial strides in catching up to the Chiefs. Los Angeles seems to have made more of a lateral move then a bonafide step forward and the Chiefs still remain the Chiefs thanks to the retention for their core group of stars for another year. At the same time, these teams always play each other close so these opening odds aren’t surprising in the slightest.
