The Los Angeles Chargers are one of the most interesting teams in the NFL heading into next season after revamping their offensive staff. Mike McDaniel, widely regarded as one of the best play-callers in the NFL, has replaced Greg Roman as the new offensive coordinator in Los Angeles and should help that unit improve right away.
Of course, many fans immediately became excited for McDaniel’s partnership with Justin Herbert. Herbert is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league, but bad play-calling and offensive line play has consistently held his offenses back.
Now, at least the former of those issues won’t be a problem anymore. McDaniel and Herbert have already been building a bond during LA’s mandatory minicamp and are getting comfortable with each other.
On Tuesday, the former Miami Dolphins head coach talked about his initial impressions of Herbert, via Alex Insdorf of Bolt Beat.
“Things are very good…you feel like you know the athlete you’re dealing with,” McDaniel said. “I had a good sense of how extremely hard-working the guy was.”
He later added an update on the star quarterback that is bad news for the rest of the AFC.
“He does the footwork to master it,” McDaniel added. “There’s gonna be a lot of positive consequences, how he throws, how we can get it to our eligibles … It will benefit us greatly I think.”
Herbert has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL since he entered the league and lit it up as a rookie. Even in his down years, he has given some inferior Chargers rosters chances to compete and win week after week, even if the record is up-and-down.
If Herbert is still improving like McDaniel says he is this offseason, he will at the very least still be near the top of the league next season. Combine that with a play-caller that should improve the running game and overall ecosystem and a receiver group that Jim Harbaugh is extremely confident in, and Los Angeles might have a dark horse AFC contender on their hands.
