The Los Angeles Chargers have had a busy offseason, with one of the big stories being the hiring of Mike McDaniel to be the team’s new offensive coordinator. McDaniel will hope to bring the Chargers’ offense to a new level this season, building around the talents of star quarterback Justin Herbert.

Now, more is being revealed about how McDaniel is working with Herbert himself to improve his game this season and beyond.

“Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel said Wednesday that he’s changed how quarterback Justin Herbert lines up in the shotgun. Herbert, who throws with his right arm, is now using a stance with his left foot forward — a technique McDaniel has coached with quarterbacks at his previous stops in Washington, Atlanta and Miami,” reported NFL Nation on ESPN.com.

It’s certainly an interesting strategy, but McDaniel has helped engineer some elite offenses during his time in the NFL, so Herbert would be wise to listen to his advice.

“It wasn’t broke. This is a really good player,” clarified McDaniel.

Herbert has become one of the more polarizing players in fan debates around the NFL in recent years. On the one hand, he clearly has MVP-level ability, with a large frame, elite accuracy, and impressive arm strength. However, he has also tended to come up short in the biggest moments throughout his career, including in a brutal performance against the New England Patriots in last year’s playoffs.

The Chargers are hoping that McDaniel, who did not return to the Miami Dolphins as head coach after a tough 2025 season, will be able to unlock a new level in Herbert’s game and take the Chargers into legit contention in the AFC.
