During Thursday’s training camp practice, Chargers star left tackle Rashawn Slater went down on the field following a play and was immediately attended to by trainers, per The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.
Soon after being looked at, the training staff brought out the cart and took Slater off the field. Before going inside, Slater was seen visibly upset, threw his helmet on the ground, and hit the cart with his hand. A trainer also put a towel over his head as he exited the field.
I have no way of sugarcoating this. It does not look good at all.
Before we even have the chance for an official report on the injury, the events that followed Slater going to the ground do not spell anything near position. We’ve seen it all before. For now, I think we all need to prepare for the worst and expect the best. If he avoided a torn ACL, then he’s going to be covered in bubblewrap until he’s 100 percent ready to return to the field. If it’s the worst-case scenario, then the Chargers will have to look ahead to a new option at left tackle, whether that’s Joe Alt switching sides or Trey Pipkins entering the starting lineup once again.
The Chargers made Slater the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history recently, only further adding salt to this incredibly unfortunate development.
We’ll update this as soon as more information becomes available.
