The Los Angeles Chargers have worked hard to rebuild their offense this offseason after flaming out with just three points in the playoffs last year, and it started at the top. Greg Roman is out as the offensive coordinator in Los Angeles and has been replaced by Mike McDaniel, one of the best offensive minds in the sport.
There are many things McDaniel needs to accomplish with the roster this year, but getting wide receiver Ladd McConkey back on track is near the top of the list. After a standout rookie season, the former Georgia Bulldog struggled at times in year two.
Unfortunately, things aren’t off to a great start for McConkey in his quest to re-establish himself near the top of the league. He revealed at mandatory minicamp on Tuesday that he has been dealing with a serious hamstring injury that has hindered him so far this offseason, via Kris Rhim of ESPN.
“Ladd McConkey said he strained his left hamstring during Phase 2 of the Chargers’ offseason program but doesn’t view it as a significant concern and expects to be ready for training camp,” Rhim reported on X, formerly Twitter.
McConkey was limited during voluntary workouts and mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, participating in some individual drills but sitting out of the team portions of minicamp. Now, we know why.
There were a number of reasons why McConkey took a step back in year two, including the return of Keenan Allen and the breakout season from Quentin Johnston. Still, the drop in his numbers is undeniable. After soaring well over 1,100 yards as a rookie, the former second-round pick finished 2025 with just 66 catches for 789 yards and six touchdowns.
Still, McConkey can be a big weapon for Justin Herbert and this Chargers offense when he is at his best. He is elite from the slot, but he also has the skills to play a bit on the outside. Herbert has shown plenty of trust in him during his career, and getting him back to being the top option in the offense could make this a much-improved unit in 2026.
