Nic Scourton starred at Purdue from 2022-2023 before transferring to Texas A&M for the 2024 season.
With the Chargers facing a potential situation where both Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa aren’t on the team during the 2025 season, the team may be forced to use one of their high draft picks on a replacement. If Mack stays in LA, this isn’t that high on the priority list. But if not, this is a good enough edge class that the Chargers should be able to find an impact player even at the 22nd-overall pick.
In this new mock draft from CBS Sports, NFL analyst Tom Fornelli has the Chargers selecting former Purdue and Texas A&M edge rusher Nic Scourton with the 22nd-overall pick. In this mock, Scourton is the fourth edge rusher off the board, coming behind Penn State’s Abdul Carter, Georgia’s Mykel Williams, and Marshall’s Mike Green.
If both Mack and Bosa are gone, Scourton would help solidify a room that, before his hypothetical selection, would have third-year Tuli Tuipulotu and veteran Bud Dupree as the default starters.
“Maybe the Chargers look to add to their OL here or do something “fun” by taking Ashton Jeanty. With questions about Khalil Mack’s future, as well as the health of Joey Bosa, addressing the pass rush probably isn’t a bad option, either. Scourton strikes me as the kind of edge presence Jim Harbaugh appreciates. He gets after the quarterback while also serving as a positive, setting the edge against the run.”
After a freshman year at Purdue that saw him record just two tackles for loss and two sacks, Scourton broke out during the 2023 season with 15 tackles for loss and 10 sacks for the Boilermakers. After showing he was one of the best in the country, Scourton chose to transfer to Texas A&M in to compete in the SEC and prove he could still be as disruptive agains the best of the best.
In his lone season with the Aggies, Scourton recorded another 14 tackles for loss but saw his sack total get cut in half to five. Still, the 6’4, 285-pounder has all the tools necessary to be a success at the NFL level. The speed and explosiveness for a player his size is almost hard to believe and it’s what makes him ready to be a three-down player at the next level. In fact, he might be the best run defender at EDGE in the entire class. The way he’s able to set a consistent edge is remarkable. Just check out this clip below against LSU’s Will Campbell, the nation’s top offensive tackle.
Scourton was invited to this year’s Reese’s Senior Bowl, but pulled out at the last second. Could be due to knowing he was a lock for the first round and did not want to risk injury, but questions remain as he had not formally declined the invite. He just simply did not show up on Monday with the rest of the participants.
Still, it...
