In a sudden move move by the Chargers on Sunday morning, the team has announced that starting fullback Scott Matlock has been downgraded to OUT against the Dolphins due to a personal matter. This will be yet another loss on offense for the Chargers who are already going to be without their top three offensive tackles, their top two running backs, their top tight end, an potentially their top wideout in Quentin Johnston who is reportedly leaning towards not playing (hamstring), per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Without Matlock, the Chargers will have to shift their offensive game plan a bit now that they won’t be able to line up with a fullback. However, if they’re dead set on being able to run plays out of those packages, tight end Tucker Fisk has experience playing in the backfield and being used in a similar role. Ideally, Fisk has been working in that backup role for this exact scenario. If not, we may end up seeing the Chargers attempting to run the ball from more spread looks and other varying personnel packages.
