The Chargers and general manager Joe Hortiz have made a move following their second consecutive loss in an attempt to strengthen a defense that just got walloped by the Commanders in Week Five.
Per NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Chargers are trading starting safety Alohi Gilman and a 2026 fifth-round pick in exchange for Ravens edge rusher Odafe Oweh and a 2027 seventh-round pick. The move comes while veteran Khalil Mack is still on IR returning from a dislocated elbow.
This season, only one Chargers pass rusher has double-digit pressures and that’s Tuli Tuipulotu (27) who also leads the team with four sacks. Behind him is defensive tackle Da’Shawn Hand who missed most of Week Five with an injury he occurred early on.
Oweh is a former first-round pick of the Ravens in 2021 out of Penn State. Since entering the NFL, he has produced at least 43 pressures and five sacks in each year, including a career high 10 in 2024 to go with nine tackles for loss.
Through five games this year, however, Oweh has zero sacks and zero tackles for loss while playing in all five games with two starts. His lack of production could be a product of the Ravens’ horrific defense this season and that looks to be what Jim Harbaugh and Hortiz feel is the case here or else the price tag may not end up being worth the gain.
