Former Cincinnati Bengals Pro Bowl wide receiver Chad ‘OchoCinco’ Johnson, always willing to engage with his followers on social media, was recently asked “how do you stop 85?” Johnson apparently took the question as who could stop him on the field and gave an honest answer: legendary New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis.
During his prime, Johnson was one of the best receivers in the National Football League as he had six straight season with at least 1,150 yards and five touchdown receptions.
As a member of the Cincinnati Bengals, Johnson played in six games against the New York Jets from 2001 to 2010.
Revis — now enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of Gang Green — was drafted in 2007, meaning he was on the Jets for four of those matchups against Johnson. In those four games, Jonhson had 12 catches for 200 yards and zero touchdowns. Much of that, however — 3 catches for 102 yards — came in the October of Revis’ rookie season.

When Revis was at his peak, his was known as “Revis Island,” as the opponent’s #1 receiver would be out on an island and unable to catch the ball against him. There is a famous graphic from 2009, Rex Ryan’s first season in charge that saw the Jets reach the AFC Championship game, of all the elite pass catchers that Revis had shut down throughout the year, holding the likes of Johnson, Randy Moss (twice), Terrell Owens (twice), Andre Johnson Reggie Wayne, Steve Smith, Torry Holt, and Marques Colston to under 35 receiving yards.
Revis, drafted #14 overall out of the University of Pittsburgh by the New York Jets in 2007, played with the team from 2007 to 2012 and again from 2015 to 2016. Revis also had one year stops with the Tampa Bay Bucs in 2013, New England Patriots in 2014 (winning a Super Bowl with the team), and the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, the final season of his career.
Revis was names to four All-Pro first teams, seven Pro Bowls, and was named to the NFL’s 2010s All-Decade team before being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2023.
