The much-coveted role of starting quarterback is still up for grabs on the Cleveland Browns, as coach Todd Monken recently admitted that they are still deliberating between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson in a classic youngster-versus-veteran dilemma.
Sanders showed flashes of brilliance last season, although the sample size was small. Watson, meanwhile, is eager to get his career back on track. He has been derailed by various ailments and legal battles over the past few years. He sat out last season due to an Achilles injury.
According to Chad Johnson, citing what he has supposedly heard from sources, Watson will get the nod as the main quarterback. Johnson, however, was quick to add a caveat.
“Deshaun Watson is the starting QB for the Cleveland Browns. The job Deshaun Watson’s gonna get, it is his job to lose,” claimed Johnson on “Nightcap.”
“He has six weeks. I guarantee you. Listen to me now, I’m telling, I’m calling it right now. He has six weeks to make sure that the team is playing above or better than whatever the expectations may be for that team and that quarterback. If he’s not, Shedeur Sanders will fall in line as the backup and be the starter for the remainder of the season.”

In eight appearances last season, the 24-year-old Sanders passed for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He was named to the Pro Bowl as a replacement despite his meager numbers.
The 30-year-old Watson, meanwhile, has mightily struggled since being traded to the Browns by the Houston Texans in 2022. Many have already written off the former star, who has only played 19 games in Cleveland.
The Browns have only been to the playoffs once in the last five seasons.
