Another door has been slammed shut on controversial quarterback Brendan Sorsby. The CFL announced Friday that Sorsby will not be allowed to join any of its teams for the upcoming season.

“Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL,” the CFL said in a statement to USA Today. “The allegations involving Brendan Sorsby are serious and concerning.

“At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list.”

Sorsby placed more than 9,000 bets totaling at least $90,000 across a four-year span. Court documents revealed that during his time at Indiana alone, he placed at least 2,900 bets, which included 40 impermissible wagers on his own football team.

Earlier this week, the NFL denied Sorsby’s request to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft.

Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns at Cincinnati last year, while also rushing for 580 yards and another nine scores. His 36 total touchdowns were tied for third in the nation. He transferred to Texas Tech this offseason before getting wrapped up in a gambling scandal.

Suspended NFL players can no longer play in the CFL, but since Sorsby was in-between status, he was eligible to play in Canada. The CFL acted swiftly to prevent that scenario, however.

Sorsby’s options for 2026 are extremely limited. Playing in the UFL prior to the 2027 NFL Draft could be his best possibility.

Before the NFL shut down Sorsby’s chances of entering the league, Kalshi’s prediction markets had the Steelers as the favorites to land Sorsby.

NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay thought the Pittsburgh Steelers would’ve been an ideal landing spot for Sorsby.

“Can’t you see the Steelers?” McShay said on The McShay Show. “Because the Steelers have been mired in this, we’re good enough every year. We’re right on the fringe. We’re either in the playoffs, getting knocked out early or we just miss the playoffs. So we’re always picking around 21 or 23 or 25, so we can’t get that guy. … This is a unique opportunity for the Steelers. I’m just throwing it out there.”
