The Dallas Cowboys opened training camp this week as they prep for the 2025 NFL season. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb fully expects to receive a fine from the league at some point during the year.

New addition George Pickens plays a part in that line of thinking. The duo debuted a new touchdown celly that’s sure to catch officials’ eyes.

The team was on the field for practice Wednesday. At one point, Lamb took a short pass to the house for a long catch and run.

After arriving in the endzone, he met up with Pickens to celebrate.

A number of Cowboys fans loved the handshake. Lamb’s bank account might not feel the same.

Why will CeeDee Lamb’s celebration get fined?

The NFL fine rules are clear on “violent gestures.” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell spoke on the league’s policy last year.

“It’s a long-standing policy and we are going to enforce that… We’re going to continue on that focus. We don’t think it’s appropriate in those circumstances and sends the wrong message.”

-Roger Goodell

There’s been an influx of weapon-related celebrations in football, both at the professional and college levels. The NFL wants to minimize these types of gestures.

CeeDee Lamb’s handshake with George Pickens features a fake gun and grenade. He’s already bracing for punishment from the league.

“I’ll pay the fine,” he said after practice. “It shouldn’t be a fine, but Lord knows they’re going to give it to us.”

Lamb is no stranger to NFL fines. He was docked over $14k for a similar first down celebration in 2024.

Where does NFL fine money go?

The league rakes in around $4 million annually off of rules violations. The NFL, however, does not pocket that cash.

Instead, the money goes towards “improving the lives of those touched by the game of football.”

Fine money does not go to the NFL. All the money collected from fines goes to programs for former players.

-NFL Operations

All fines are technically “under the purview of the NFL Foundation.” The non-profit works with other organizations to include the NFLPA Players Assistance Fund, the NFL Player Care Foundation, and various charities.

CeeDee Lamb isn’t worried about the potential of being fined by the league. At least he can sleep well knowing whatever money is owed from his celebration with George Pickens will go to a good cause.
