Despite speculation that Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford could be on the trade block, ESPN insider Dan Graziano thinks Stafford will likely stay in L.A. Stafford signed a four-year, $160 million extension with the Rams in March of 2022, so he’s signed through the 2026 season.
“Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is likely to return to L.A. in 2025, according to sources close to the situation…Something will have to be done with Stafford’s contract, though, as was the case last offseason…Look for the team to convert salary into bonuses again to lower the hit and move Stafford’s 2025 compensation into a range more befitting of a good starting NFL quarterback,” Graziano wrote.
CBS proposed a trade scenario that has the the Steelers receiving Stafford and the Rams’ first round pick (No. 26 overall), while the Rams get Pittsburgh’s first round pick (No. 21 overall), second-round pick (No. 52 overall) and a conditional 2026 second-round pick.
It’s an interesting trade proposal, but again, it seems like Stafford will remain with the Rams. But anything can happen.
This trade proposal is quite similar to the Aaron Rodgers one from a few years back (from CBS Sports).

Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky thinks it wouldn’t the hurt the Steelers to make a phone call to L.A.
“Honestly, if I were the Giants, if I were the Steelers, if I were a lot of teams that would be my number one call. Try to see kind of what the plan is for Matthew Stafford,” Orlovsky said on NFL Live.
The Steelers were recently tabbed as the best fit for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. The New York Giants are another possible team that could land the Super Bowl champion QB.
“The Steelers may be preparing for another reset of their quarterback room, as both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are looking for new deals. Things aren’t exactly peachy in Pittsburgh right now. No one cares that Mike Tomlin hasn’t registered a losing season in 18 straight years with the Steelers, because Pittsburgh hasn’t won a playoff game since 2016. The Steelers have lost six straight postseason matchups, and have allowed at least 28 points in all six of those losses. It’s the longest such streak in NFL history!” Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports wrote.
“What’s the best option for Pittsburgh at quarterback? Trading up in the draft and hoping Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders is the answer? Probably not. Do the Steelers want to enter the bidding war for Sam Darnold, or take a flier on the 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers? Maybe Stafford is the best option — if he’s made available.”
