There is a significant double standard when it comes to the NFL and gambling. The Carolina Panthers put that double standard on full display prior to Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

They promoted the betting total just a few hours before kickoff.

Meanwhile, there is a sports betting scandal actively ongoing within other professional sports leagues. The NFL also issued multiple suspensions to a number of star players for similar violations over the last few years.

The NFL is strict on gambling.

There are six main points to the National Football League’s policy on sports betting. They break down as follow:

  • Bets cannot be placed on the NFL.
  • Bets cannot be placed while at the team facility, during travel for a road game, or at a team hotel.
  • Someone else cannot place a bet on a player’s behalf.
  • Sharing “inside information” is strictly prohibited.
  • Players cannot enter a sportsbook during the NFL season.
  • Players cannot play daily fantasy football.

Seems fair. Athletes should not be allowed to bet on themselves, their own team or their sport. Any such player who chooses to do so should be punished accordingly. Lifetime bans are more than warranted for the most egregious of violations.

This same train of thought applies to other pro sports leagues, like the NBA and NHL.

Sports betting partners blur the line.

Although the NFL is strict on gambling, it continues to take money from sportsbooks like DraftKings and FanDuel. These partnerships are actually some of the most lucrative.

With that in mind, the Carolina Panthers posted on X to promote one of the league’s official partners prior to kickoff on Sunday. They shared a direct link for fans to sign up for the FanDuel sportsbook while pushing the betting total of Over/Under 43.5.

A player would be suspended for life if he was to bet on the Over/Under for his own game. We are only a few years removed from a massive gambling scandal involving high-profile athletes like Jameson Williams. The NBA is currently dealing with allegations of rigged games and individual performances.

And yet, the official Carolina Panthers team account is actively promoting totals. The double standard is real.
