The Carolina Panthers have fired one of their public relations employees over a post he made on social media about the death of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. The employee that was let go, Charlie Rock, was the team’s football communications coordinator after joined the organization as a public relations intern in 2024.

Rock reportedly posted a video on his personal Instagram account that showed Charlie Kirk speaking at an event with the caption, “Why are yall sad? Your man said it was worth it….” The post also included a screenshot of the Wu-Tang Clan song, “Protect Ya Neck.”

The event Rock was referring to was a speech Kirk gave in 2023 in which the co-founder of Turning Point USA said about mass shootings and gun deaths, “I think it’s worth [it] to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights. That is a prudent deal. It is rational. Nobody talks like this. They live in a complete alternate universe.”

Carolina Panthers address employee’s comments

Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer reported that the Carolina Panthers fired Charlie Rock over the post. The Carolina Panthers would later address Rock’s post on their X (Twitter) account, writing, “The views expressed by our employees are their own and do not represent those of the Carolina Panthers. We do not condone violence of any kind. We are taking this matter very seriously and have accordingly addressed it with the individual.”

Charlie Rock did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Athletic and the Charlotte Observer reported that their efforts to reach Rock by phone call and text message weren’t immediately successful.

The 31-year-old Kirk was shot in the neck Wednesday while he was speaking at a rally at Utah Valley University and later succumbed to his injuries. As of Thursday morning, the shooter is still at large, but the FBI has released photos of a person of interest.
