Pats Pulpit
The New England Patriots defense had some good moments in the first half of its wild card playoff game against the Los Angeles Chargers, but it also saw one of its starting members depart with an injury. In the second quarter, cornerback Carlton Davis left with what was later announced as a toe injury.
He is officially questionable to return to the game.
Filling his usual role as the Patriots’ starting outside cornerback opposite Pro Bowler Christian Gonzalez, Davis registered three tackles and a quarterback hit before leaving the game. That hit, coming on the Chargers’ final offensive possession of the second quarter, was his final play before the exit.
The 29-year-old came off the field after putting pressure on L.A. quarterback Justin Herbert, headed to the blue medical tent, and later departed for the locker room. New England’s fourth cornerback, Charles Woods took over his role on defense.
Davis joined the Patriots on a three-year, $54 million free agency contract in March. Starting all 17 regular season games, he ranked second on the team with 926 defensive snaps. Along the way, he registered 69 tackles and 10 pass breakups.
