The Arizona Cardinals made a cluster of moves on Wednesday, leading up to their opening practice of the week in preparation for the Green Bay Packers. First, the team opened the practice window for 2025 first-round defensive tackle Walter Nolen, who has been dealing with a calf injury since July. Secondly, they swapped around tight ends, which included a promotion of Josiah Deguara from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.
To make room for Deguara, the Packers’ 2020 third-round pick, the team placed tight end Travis Vokolek on the injured reserve and backfilled Deguara’s practice squad spot with tight end Pharaoh Brown.
In four years with the Packers, Deguara played in 50 games, making 10 starts. For the most part, the undersized tight end contributed as a hybrid fullback and special teams player for the team. Over those years, he played between 20 percent and 35 percent of offensive snaps, on top of 559 special teams reps.
To put it mildly, he was a rotational player for head coach Matt LaFleur, which probably didn’t justify a Day 2 selection. Still, Deguara continues to find work in the NFL. Last season, he played 15 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars, though he only played 87 offensive snaps (10 percent) for the team over those games. In the receiving game, he only caught three receptions for 14 yards.
Deguara was activated for one regular-season game for the Cardinals earlier this year, the team’s win over the Carolina Panthers over a month ago. That was also the last win that Arizona has recorded. Deguara didn’t play on offense for that game, but did play 14 special teams snaps (64 percent).
It’s hard to call this a revenge opportunity for Deguara, considering that he shouldn’t be on the field much offensively, but don’t be surprised if you see a familiar face playing in the kicking game for the Cardinals on Sunday.
