New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been a constant news story since signing with the Pats in March. His $69 million deal was headline-worthy enough, but the sports tabloids had a much bigger field day around Diggs’ now-infamous Memorial Day weekend “Yacht video” that showed him doing things other than watching film.
Diggs took care to clear the air with New England’s media members this week in a cool move before the start of the regular season. It was wise of Diggs to do so, too, because there’s no way he’s going to be keeping a low media profile as a Patriot. When you’re dating a music superstar like Cardi B, the tabloids find you even if you’re trying with all of your might to evade them.
Diggs is a charismatic guy who attracts the spotlight, and his relationship with Cardi B will only intensify the glare of that light. But why should it matter? Diggs looks ready to go for Week 1, and any NFL fan has seen far more “distracting” elements attached to players who still go out and execute on game day. Let’s not blow “Yachtgate” out of proportion.
The latest Diggs-Cardi B news should be nothing but music to Patriots fans’ ears, by the way. People magazine’s Daniela Avila reported on Cardi B calling Diggs’ work ethic “inspirational”.
“He has to do two different things: learn his playbook and get physical,” Cardi B said, per Avila. “He has to be in bed at a certain time and wake up at a certain time. I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh. You’re literally in the military. You really work hard.’ I work hard, but I can take a little break … it’s very inspirational to see how hard somebody works. It’s just like, ‘Wow. You should be proud of yourself.'”
Don’t forget that Diggs had to work himself back into elite shape after suffering an ACL injury last season, and he’s done just that. Diggs will be ready for battle on Sunday with his new teammates as the Patriots take on the Las Vegas Raiders at Gillette Stadium.
If Diggs can stay healthy and become a reliable target for Drake Maye this season, he’ll surely become a fan favorite in New England. Between his preseason fitness and dealings with the media — not to mention the inside scoop from Cardi B — it’s awesome to see that Diggs is completely locked in right now.
