Every year, one or two undrafted free agents emerge from relative obscurity to earn meaningful NFL roles. The Cincinnati Bengals are hoping linebacker Eric Gentry can become the next name on that list.
After going undrafted out of USC, Gentry landed in Cincinnati as one of the more fascinating developmental prospects in this year’s rookie class. At 6-foot-7 with extraordinary length and athleticism, he looks unlike just about any linebacker currently in the NFL.
Now, he’ll attempt to turn those rare physical traits into a roster spot under new defensive coordinator Al Golden.
Gentry’s college journey took a unique path.
Originally beginning his career at Arizona State, the Philadelphia native flashed immediately as a true freshman before transferring to USC ahead of the 2022 season.
Over four years with the Trojans, Gentry developed into one of the defense’s most recognizable playmakers. He totaled 271 career tackles, 27 tackles for loss, nine sacks, two interceptions, 13 passes defended and nine forced fumbles during his collegiate career.
But what consistently stood out wasn’t just the production. It was his frame.
Standing nearly 6-foot-7 with a wingspan more commonly associated with NBA forwards than NFL linebackers, Gentry became known for disrupting passing lanes, chasing down ball carriers from the backside and serving as a versatile chess piece capable of playing off-ball linebacker while occasionally rushing off the edge.
Those traits intrigued NFL evaluators.
Questions about his weight, play strength and positional fit ultimately kept him from hearing his name called during the draft. The Bengals wasted little time changing that.
It’s easy to understand why Al Golden wanted to get a closer look. Gentry simply possesses traits that can’t be coached.
His length allows him to affect passing lanes in ways few linebackers can, while his athleticism gives him legitimate sideline-to-sideline range. He’s also shown flashes as a blitzer and has a knack for forcing turnovers, making him an intriguing developmental piece in a defense looking to become faster and more versatile.
Of course, there are reasons he entered the league as an undrafted free agent.
At roughly 220 pounds, Gentry remains undersized by NFL linebacker standards. He’ll need to add functional strength, improve his ability to shed blocks and become a more consistent tackler before he’s ready for significant defensive snaps.
Fortunately for both player and team, Cincinnati doesn’t need him to contribute immediately.
The Bengals significantly reshaped their defense this offseason, but linebacker remains one of the more intriguing position battles entering training camp.
Veterans and draft picks are expected to occupy the top spots on the depth chart, meaning Gentry’s clearest path to making the roster will likely come through special teams and showcasing his versatility throughout the preseason. His unique physical profile also opens the door for creative usage.
