Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward is not focused on trying to recruit free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
PITTSBURGH — One year ago, Steelers longtime team captain Cameron Heyward recruited veteran quarterback Russell Wilson to Pittsburgh. He doesn’t feel the need to do that this time around with Aaron Rodgers, though.
“There’s no need to recruit,” Heyward said. “It’s been more black and white up front.”
It’s up for interpretation why Heyward is shifting his focus elsewhere. It could be because, like the Steelers, he is confident the four-time NFL MVP will eventually sign with the team.
However, it could also be because Heyward is fed up with waiting and needs to focus on the 2025 season with OTAs officially kicking off on Tuesday.
“You roll with who’s here. It’s not guessing. You gotta get to work you put in. You can’t worry about who’s not here. Same way goes if I was to miss practice. Train keeps going,” Heyward said. “We’ll see what happens. You really just can’t worry about what’s going on outside of here. That’s the way the Steelers have always run the ship.”
Heyward has already changed his tone a couple times this offseason in regards to Rodgers. In March, he seemed to put Rodgers on notice.
“I ain’t doing that darkness retreat. I don’t need any of that crap,” Heyward said. “Either you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don’t. That simple, that’s the pitch. If you want me to recruit, that’s the recruiting pitch. Pittsburgh Steelers — if you want to be part of it, so be it. If you don’t, no skin off my back.”
Just one month later, he pleaded with his impatient fanbase that they must all give Rodgers time to make his decision.
“I don’t think we’ve given people enough patience. I think in this day and age with social media and everything, we kind of just expect an answer right there, right now,” Heyward said. “And I don’t know where this is gonna end. I don’t know if he’s gonna be a Steeler. I don’t know if he already is a Steeler, but I think, let’s just show some patience.”
It remains to be seen when the Rodgers saga will finally end, but like many others, Heyward is now focusing his attention elsewhere.
