The Philadelphia Eagles enter this season as the team to beat, not only in the NFC but in the entire league.
They have absolutely everything they need to return to the mountaintop and repeat as Super Bowl champions.
However, that doesn’t necessarily mean they have a top-10 quarterback.
At least, that’s how Cam Newton feels.
In the latest edition of his podcast, the former MVP claimed that he had to leave Jalen Hurts outside of his top 10 of NFL quarterbacks, not because he wasn’t a very good player, but because of all the talent he has around him:
“It’s hard for me to grade Jalen Hurts with the talent that he has around him,” Newton said on his 4th & 1 show. “Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback. But if we’re talking about what they bring to the table holistically, it’s hard to judge what Jalen Hurts can do when you’re not throwing to a guy like A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith. We have tight end skill sets. You have a dominant defense, the best running back in the game.”

Of course, that’s not necessarily a fair assessment.
He shouldn’t be blamed for his elite supporting cast, and the numbers are there.
Hurts had to deal with this type of criticism long before he even set foot on an NFL gridiron.
Some fans and analysts even called for the Eagles to move on from him before he led them to the Super Bowl a couple of years ago.
Now, after winning the biggest game of the season, some still have doubts about him.
We’re living in the most quarterback-friendly era in NFL history, and one could make a case for at least half of the starters in the league to be top-10 signal-callers right now.
To each his own, and perhaps Newton, who clearly knows a thing or two about the quarterback position, feels differently about Hurts.
Still, no one can take what he’s done away from him, and it’s about time he gets some respect.
