Despite a remarkable career that saw him win an MVP award and lead the Carolina Panthers to a Super Bowl appears, Cam Newton left behind a complicated NFL resume. At the peak of his powers, he was a one-of-a-kind talent. But he also showed examples of a selfish, me-first attitude that soured many fans on the quarterback.
Newton himself has even acknowledged as much, admitting that he opted not to attempt to recover a fumble in Super Bowl 50 because he was concerned about getting injured. He amended his stance in hindsight, claiming that he should’ve been more willing to sacrifice his body for the chance to win a Super Bowl.
But Newton’s latest comments about his MVP Award and a potential Super Bowl victory won’t do much to change the way that many people view him.
Stephen A. Smith: “Cam, if you could give back that league MVP for a Super Bowl championship, would you do it?”
Cam Newton: “No” pic.twitter.com/b1wVO2i7Nh

On Thursday’s episode of ESPN “First Take,” Stephen A. Smith asked Newton if he would trade his MVP award for a Super Bowl victory. Most quarterbacks would say “yes” without hesitation, at least publicly. But not Cam Newton.
“No,” Newton said plainly. ““What’s more important, impact or championships?” Newton said. “Brad Johnson won a Super Bowl. Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl. Respectfully, Nick Foles won a Super Bowl.
“I know that’s not the popular pick,” Newton said. “My take is I’m taking individual success because I did my job.”
Now, at very least he’s being honest and his logic tracks. He believes it shows he did his job. But the point of the game is to win, and more specifically to win the Super Bowl. You’d think you’d give up anything to reach that goal.
But hey, there’s a reason why Cam Newton is truly one of a kind.
