Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward made headlines late last week when it was revealed he was seeking a new contract just over a year after signing a two-year extension. Heyward spoke to the media for the first time since his hold-in began, saying he wishes “to be valued.”

“When I look around at my position, I think I’m like 22nd as a defensive tackle,” Heyward said. “I’m 36th as a D-lineman. I know what I bring to this team and what I’m capable of on and off the field. So it’s hard for me to, after the year I’ve had, to really justify playing at the number I’m playing at… I understand I signed the contract last year, but to be completely honest with you, when I signed that, I told them, ‘When I have an All-Pro year, I wanna come back.‘ Everyone kinda giggled.”

Heyward also noted that “there are options” that include him missing games if a deal doesn’t get done before the regular season begins.

Should Heyward miss time, it would likely lead to a big divide in the fan base. While he is very respected amongst fans, he is developing quite a polarizing personality when it comes to the consistency of asking for new contracts and more money.
