Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro defensive tackle Cam Heyward did not hold back on the Cleveland Browns after they sent two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in a blockbuster trade.
“I think Aaron’s definitely happy to not have that guy in our division. I could care less. I like competing against talent,” Heyward said on his Not Just Football podcast.
Heyward then took a jab at the Browns.
“I don’t think anyone wants to be in Cleveland,” he joked.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Garrett has racked up 412 tackles, 125.5 sacks, 23 forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and 18 passes defended in his professional career.
Against the Steelers, he has recorded 13 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, 26 QB hits and four forced fumbles.
To say the least, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy is relieved that he will not have to game plan for Garrett.
“I’m all for it,” McCarthy said at mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. “No, Myles Garrett is a phenomenal player. I had a chance to compete against him two years ago, so when you see those type of situations, it happens, and he obviously will have a great opportunity out there in L.A. These trades and transactions, I’m never surprised, but what a great player.
Steelers second-year quarterback Will Howard was among the first players to react to Garrett leaving the AFC North.
“Not bad for us,” Howard said. “We don’t have to play that beast twice every year. They’re bringing in a great player in Jared verse, so it’s gonna create more challenges. But just looking at it, it’ll be nice to not have to play that dude twice a year.”
Jim Schwartz resigned as the Browns’ defensive coordinator after being passed on for the head coach position.
Following the reports of Schwartz wanting out, Garrett posted a simple message on Instagram, hinting that he’s tired of the mismanagement by the Browns’ front office.
Garrett will now get the chance to finally play for a Super Bowl contender in the Rams, which he’s been coveting.
“Speaking with the management of the Browns, at this current time, I don’t feel like our future is aligned with winning right now,” Garrett said in February of 2025. “That’s what I’m looking forward to doing at this stage of my career. I have a lot of love for northeast Ohio and a community that brought me into the league. But I want to get to contending and winning playoff games and be in games like today.”
